Advancing Telemedicine in Asia: Enabling Environments & Emerging Opportunities
Across Asia, telemedicine has undergone rapid transformation with technological advancements, evolving from basic telephone consultations to sophisticated digital platforms. However, its adoption and scaling face significant barriers, including a lack of clear understanding of telemedicine and its components, its siloed deployment, and inadequate consideration for enabling environments such as supportive policies and technological infrastructure.
Aligning with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Digital Policy (2024-2034) and Digital Health Position paper (2024-2029), this resource focuses on advancing regional capacities for telemedicine in Asia, and, by extension, digital health. Through secondary research, this document aims to define telemedicine and its components, understand the institutional factors that enable its adoption, and explore where the opportunities lie to drive this innovative health service delivery at scale across Asia.
Tailored for policymakers and individuals tasked with financing, designing, or overseeing telemedicine initiatives in Asia, this resource offers potential opportunities and research-based insights to ensure that telemedicine interventions deliver lasting value to both the health care system and the communities they serve.
